Artists spend a lot of time talking about the lack of support in the music industry. They complain about streaming royalties, declining music sales, venue pay, shrinking opportunities, and audiences that seem increasingly unwilling to open their wallets. Some of those concerns are completely legitimate. The problem is that many of those same artists are actively contributing to the very conditions they're complaining about.

In this article, I take a hard look at a simple question that too many musicians avoid asking themselves:

If you don't value your own music, why should anyone else?

For years, artists have been told that exposure is more important than value. As a result, many have spent years giving away their music, their time, and their talent while simultaneously wondering why audiences have come to expect exactly that. The uncomfortable reality is that markets learn value from the signals they're given, and many artists have spent years signaling that their work should be available for little or nothing.

At some point, musicians have to decide whether they believe their music has value or not. Because if the creator isn't willing to assign value to the work, it shouldn't come as a surprise when listeners, promoters, venues, and the broader industry reach the same conclusion.
